Module Overview

Management Consulting Project

Management Consulting Project (MCP) is a capstone component of the learning journey of the student. It is a self-directed work and accounts for 15 ECTS credits of the learners’ programme.

The structure lends itself to participants completing a Management Consulting Project on behalf of an organization selected by the programme team. This flexible nature of the selected organisations will also allow the learner to work with a company or industry sector that is relevant to the next stage in their career.

When completed, it demonstrates the individual competence of the student as having developed insight into the practice of Management and Marketing ‘out there’ in an organisation. Through a rigorous examination of the concepts and theoretical understandings gained through the taught semesters, the learner will work in a collaborative live setting to analyse, evaluate and articulate strategic options for the selected organisation.

Academically it tests the learner’s ability to apply learning to real management and specific marketing issues and ensures that the pedagogical strategy of the TU Dublin and School of Marketing, to be close to industry, is realised fully

Building on the semester one and two taught elements the learner will be introduced to the structure, requirements, and outcomes at the start of semester 2 in a full workshop.

Each team will be constructed by the module convenor based on semester 1 performance, individual profiling and the learner’s own working context. A team will normally consist of four or five learners.

Teams will then be assigned to an organisation’s proposed projects and all teams will meet and get a briefing from their organisational mentor (OM) in week 7 of the second semester.

In week 15 (post-examinations for semester 2) a an interim workshop will take place to review the team’s plans, approaches and schedule for the MCP with their academic mentor (AM).

Each team will meet with the AM and OM on four occasions between mid-semester 2 and the submission date.

The team will produce a written report and submission to the AM and OM and then present their findings in week 3 of September.

This is a structured self-directed module that utilises a range of methods. Workshop briefings, formal and informal meetings with AM and the OM will be supplemented by an on line resource for strategic decision-making, a repository of core texts and ongoing support from the academic staff on the programme.
